TYENDINAGA MOHAWK TERRITORY, Ont. - A blockade on the Tyendinaga First Nation, east of Belleville, is over.
About 50 people began to protest at the site of a new police building on Tuesday, upset with the band council's plan to erect the nearly $2-million facility.
Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte officials were preparing to have the building shipped from a Hamilton-area manufacturer this week and put together on a gravel pit.
But protesters were angry they hadn't been consulted, saying the money could have been spent on improving drinking water or housing.
Police Chief Ron Maracle says the blockade was taken down yesterday evening after protesters and the band council reached an agreement.
The new police building is intended to allow Tyendinaga Mohawk Police Services to expand from eight to 11 officers. (CJTN)
